Are SE-L Schools Safe?
The safety of students is the District’s number one priority. To help ensure that every school is safe and secure, exterior doors are locked and school visitors must sign in with the building secretary and wear a special sticker identifying them as a visitor.

Also, Greenview Upper Elementary, Memorial Junior High School and Brush High School are outfitted with a comprehensive security camera system. The District is applying for a federal grant that will outfit all schools with security cameras to allow District security personnel to monitor live camera footage of every building in the District.

We also meet monthly and actively work with the Lyndhurst and South Euclid Police Departments to develop safety and security plans. Both police departments provide assistance when needed and collaborate with the schools on educational programming that promotes safety to students.

It is also SE-L’s belief that building relationships with students will help prevent unacceptable student behavior. Security staff at Greenview, Memorial and Brush interacts with students on a daily basis. At Brush High School, a school resource officer can often be seen talking with students and is another trusted adult for students to turn to with problems.

How Does the District Address Illegal Residence?
The South Euclid-Lyndhurst School District takes illegal residence very seriously. It believes that students, who do not live within the District’s boundaries, should NOT be able to attend SE-L on taxpayers’ dime.

The registrar’s office adheres to strict protocol when registering students. During the registration process, parents and guardians must provide various documents that include:

  1. Proof of residence (such as a mortgage agreement, a new purchase agreement or a current rental/lease agreement)
  2. Two copies of utility bills
  3. A signed and notarized residency and custody affidavit

District personnel also:

  1. Verify renter occupancy permits with both cities
  2. Use returned mail to determine if a family is living illegally in the community
  3. Monitor a list of foreclosed and vacant homes provided by both cities

In the rare case of illegal residence, the District takes legal action against the parent or guardian to seek monetary payment for the period of illegal enrollment.

How Are We Doing Academically?
While we’re proud of our state report ranking of “Effective,” we’re always striving to reach “Excellent.”

The District boasts a 96 percent graduation rate, one of the highest in the state. Many students pursue 2- and 4-year degrees after graduation. This is made possible through the hard work of staff, involved parents, superior academic programming and dedicated students.

However, we understand there is more work to be done to reach our goal of earning “Excellent” on the state report card. Because some of our students face academic and personal barriers, the District has a variety of intervention programs in place to assist students in overcoming academic challenges. The District also is proud to offer a variety of clubs and activities to keep students involved and expose them to different careers and interests.

District personnel will continue to evaluate its academic programming and make the necessary changes to continue to meet the ever-changing needs of students.

Does the District Have Too Many Expenses?
Regardless of any looming financial challenges brought upon by the state, SE-L always tries to be fiscally responsible. In working closely with the Board of Education, the Superintendent and Treasurer monitor the budget on a weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly basis. The District works hard to minimize expenses. However, the variety of academic programs, which are in place to help student achieve and help the district maintain the “Effective” rating and strive for the “Excellent” rating, do require a serious financial investment.

To help offset some of the expenses, the District:

  1. Belongs to several purchasing consortiums to save on health, fleet, liability and property insurance. It also belongs to a purchasing consortium to purchase natural gas, electricity, school buses and supplies at a below market price.
  2. Does a central shutdown of computers, saving the District thousands of dollars on electricity.
  3. Applies to a variety of grants, which help bring additional educational programming throughout the District at an annual savings of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
How Has the District Changed?
The District has changed, as has our society and world. The District is religiously, culturally, racially and socioeconomically more diverse, as is Ohio and our county. And while the diversity of the student population has increased over the past 15 years, the graduation rate (96%) and overall state report card rating (Effective) has also increased.

Today, the District offers more advanced placement and honors courses, more technical education courses, more intervention courses and more extracurricular opportunities than ever before. Today, all day kindergarten, extended day and extended school year, 4th-12th grade college readiness programming and credit recovery programming are all routine offerings through the innovative work of our staff and administrators. Today, computers, Smart Boards and other technology are common place in our classrooms because the world has changed, our neighboring communities have changed and thus we must have change to compete and excel.

Are There Too Many Administrators?
This is a common complaint that originates in misunderstandings. In fact, SE-L has significantly less administrators than many neighboring districts. It also has less than it did years ago and can boast that over 2/3rd of the administrators staff work directly with students every day. Further, it is through the leadership of the administrative staff that innovative programs occur. Expanded academic opportunities become a reality and financial savings through grants, consortium pricing and efficiency management lowers our costs.
Has SE-L Reduced Its AP Class Offerings?
Charles F. Brush High School offers more Advanced Placement courses than most neighboring districts. AP classes have provided rigor and many learning opportunities for our students. We're proud to say that for the 2011-2012 school year, Brush will offer the following AP classes in the traditional format: AP English Literature and Composition, AP Statistics, AP Calculus BC, AP Government and Politics, AP Studio Art: Photography, AP Biology, AP Calculus AB, AP European History, AP Psychology and AP Drawing.

However, for the past few years, Brush has seen declining enrollment in some of its AP classes. The following classes will be provided online: AP Chemistry, AP Physics and AP Enviornmental Science.
