Duke University researchers found that pre-k education makes a difference in reading, writing and arithmetic and that those benefits last much longer than previously thought - through eighth grade and possibly even beyound.  Check out this NBC Nightly News report.

Preschool Philosophy

Our preschool philosophy is designed to meet the developmental needs of each child.  We strive to facilitate, encourage and enhance learning experiences for all children and to expand their knowledge of the world around them.

Our program is designed to focus on the child’s needs to explore, create, experience and socialize with other children.  Each day is filled with creative experiences and activities to stimulate and challenge every child at his or her own developmental level.

SEL Preschool Announces 20 Book Reading Challenge

The preschool staff is excited to announce the Preschool 20 Book Reading Challenge .  Students will be reading books at home and then filling out snowballs with the names of the books they read to cover a giant snowman in the SEL preschool hallway.  Research indicates that children of all ages need to be exposed to literature on a daily basis.  Reading to your child provides an emotional bond, which will be remembered for a lifetime. Reading not only informs and explains, it also entertains.  As you read to your child, they will begin to develop pre-reading skills including holding a book correctly, turning pages in the right direction and reading from left to right and top to bottom.  This is also a way to build a solid foundation and encourage a lifelong love of reading.  More helpful information about pre-reading success is available online.

Preschool Motor Room Receives Exciting Upgrades

Physical well-being and motor development are an essential part of child development.  As part of Ohio’s Early Learning Standards, students are required to be able to increase their ability to use large and small muscles to produce movements, to touch, grasp and manipulate objects, and to engage in physical activity.  Through gross motor activities, students are also able to enhance their communication skills, social-emotional development and self-help skills. These skills and behaviors play an important role in children’s physical well-being and set children on a path leading toward a healthy lifestyle. As a result, the SEL Preschool has been working in collaboration with Fun and Function to design a new motor room that incorporates a combination of new and used equipment to meet the needs of our youngest learners.  Some of our new features include a ball pit, indoor slide and a rock-climbing wall.  Our students LOVE the new motor room!!

SEL Pre-School Program Receives 5-Star Rating

The SEL Pre-School program was recently awarded a 5-Star Rating, the highest rating available, by Ohio’s Step Up to Quality (SUTQ) program. The noteworthy distinction demonstrates the high quality of education provided by the district’s Pre-School program and places it within a select group of statewide early learning programs. The SUTQ program is overseen by a cross-agency team from the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) and Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS), and evaluates the performance of early learning programs across four categories, including learning and development, administrative and leadership practices, family and community partnerships, and staff qualifications and professional development. The Pre-School Program serves children ages 3-5 years and provides high-quality educational programming four days per week. Each school day includes two separate sessions running 2.5 hours in length. For students with more intense special needs, one 5-hour session is provided five days per week. For more information about the SEL Pre-School Program, please contact the district at 216-691-2026.
