On January 24th, Brush High School students attended the NEA Big Read kickoff at the Maltz Center for Performing Arts. Thanks to the generosity of the Center for Arts-Inspired Learning, Ms. Sallie Fine's Honors English 11 students will participate in the Big Read with 26 other area schools. All 9 Cuyahoga County library systems are also participating as well as a number of other partners.

During the Big Read, English classes will read Citizen: An American Lyric by poet and essayist Claudia Rankine in conjunction with their study of Shakespeare's Othello. Students were privileged to hear Ms. Rankine speak about her writing, her background, and her personal philosophy and experiences regarding race relations in the United States.

As part of Brush's participation, students will work with a writing instructor from Lake Erie Ink and the school will host an assembly with a spoken word poet.

An initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book.  Full details can be found on BigReadCLE.com.
