Sunview’s St. Jude’s Mathathon a Special Tribute This Year

Sunview’s St. Jude’s Mathathon a Special Tribute This Year

Monday, January 14th kicks-off a very special effort on behalf of Sunview Elementary students, who each year for the past eighteen years, have participated in the St. Jude’s Mathathon contest. St. Jude’s Mathathon is sponsored by St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital and is America’s largest education-based fundraiser, whereby supplemental math curriculum is performed by K-8 students to raise money for patients at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. At Sunview, the mathathon this year takes on special meaning, since the efforts of its K-3 students will be a tribute to Devante Burns, a former Sunview student, and St. Jude’s patient, who passed away this past September.

First grade teacher, Mrs. Kathy Groudle, has overseen the program for the past eighteen years, and comments in regard to the fundraising effort, that “it is good to do good for others in need.”

Students ask for sponsors who are willing to donate a financial amount for a certain number of completed math problems, typically in the $.05- $.10/problem completed range. Prizes are given for various number of problems completed and money raised. This year, the contest begins on January 14, 2013 and runs through the end of February, and the school’s goal is $6000. Best of luck to your efforts!

Those interested in becoming a sponsor should contact Mrs. Groudle at [email protected].
