Lexi Steverding (Fire and Ice)

Artwork created by Lexi Steverding (Fire and Ice), Ava Glessner (Whiplash) and Kiara Maclin (Somewhere Over the Rainboots) was recently selected to be part of the Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition. Open to all 1,112 public and private high schools in the state of Ohio, the competition is organized by the Ohio Department of Education for the purpose of promoting an appreciation of the arts and providing a vehicle to recognize student artistic achievement.

All artwork was reviewed at the state level competition by a group of professional artists and college art instructors from across the country. Lexi Steverding, Ava Glessner and Kiara maclin join a select group of students, as only 300 pieces of artwork out of 12,000 statewide submissions were selected to be displayed at the final exhibition!

An awards ceremony will be held at noon on Sunday, April 17th in Columbus, OH, where twenty-five students will be chosen to receive the prestigious Ohio Governor’s Award of Excellence. The award provides scholarship opportunities, as over thirty universities and colleges of art offer scholarships to senior award winners. An exhibition spotlighting all 300 pieces of student artwork will open after the ceremony at 2:00 PM, at the James A. Rhodes State Office Tower located at 30 East Broad Street, Columbus, OH. The artwork will be available for viewing by the general public weekdays only from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM through Thursday, May 19th.

Prior to the state competition, Brush High was honored with the distinction of being one of fifteen sites selected to host the regional judging for the Governor's Youth Art Exhibition.  This is a significant accomplishment for the SEL Schools!  Co-Directors and Brush art instructors Hadley Conner and Sarah Curry, along with a group of dedicated student volunteers, coordinated the evaluation process of over 850 pieces of artwork submitted by students from across Northeast Ohio. A panel of five judges consisting of local artists, gallery directors and art educators selected 150 pieces of artwork to move on to the state competition.

The SEL Schools would like to congratulate Lexi Steverding, Ava Glessner and Kiara Maclin for their artistic accomplishments and wish them continued success!
