On Thursday, May 28th, 5th grade students from Team Rome and Team Rio at Greenview Upper Elementary had the opportunity to be an entrepreneur for the day by participating in the Science Invention Convention. A cross-curricular project which integrates the subject areas of language arts and science, the Science Invention Convention is based on the popular television show Shark Tank. It involves students creating an invention or product suitable for everyday use by consumers, while providing them the opportunity to pitch their product’s benefits to others. Over one-hundred 5th grade students filled the cafeteria to showcase their inventions to parents and fellow students. The students’ inventions displayed a high level of creativity and accomplished a wide range of tasks. Some notable examples included Robo Rex, a robotic pet dog, Groovy Groomer, a machine which automatically washes and grooms pets, and Clever Lever, a handy gadget which raises and lowers shelves with the simple push of a button. Approximately ten students received awards for submitting inventions with distinction. Will Farren and Megan McPherson from Team Rio, as well as Manny Torres, Joshua Smith and Marcellous Emory from Team Rome received the award for Most Creative Invention. The award for Product Most Likely to Buy was given to Team Rio’s Rowan Brown and Ari Shepherd, as well as La'Ren Pearson, Ben Bremec and Jalen Richardson from Team Rome. Congratulations to all of our 5th graders for a job well done!
