Memorial Junior High hosted an inspiring and powerful assembly in the new gym on Friday, February 23rd, 2018 to celebrate Black History Month. Through song, dance and spoken word, Memorial students paid tribute to the legacy, culture and achievements of African-Americans throughout U.S. history. The assembly featured several impressive solo and group vocal performances by students of various songs inspired by the African-American historical experience, including Rise Up by Andra Day, Glory by John Legend and Common, and Ballad of Birmingham. Several students shared highlights about their family history, traditions and culture, which they researched as part of a school-wide project. A group of male students wearing t-shirts that stated “I Matter” took turns stating their first name and shared reasons why they possessed individual value and worth. A lively step dance routine completely coordinated by the students brought forth cheers and applause from fellow peers and teachers. To conclude the presentation, teacher Patrick Brandon delivered powerful remarks about the importance of everyone working together. Thank you to the Memorial students and staff for a wonderful tribute commemorating the importance of Black History Month.
