6th Grade Girls STEM Field Trip

On Tuesday, March 7th, a group of 6th grade girls from Greenview took part in a “Math /Science Experience”. This group of girls traveled to Channel 19 for a tour of the station and had the opportunity to hear from meteorologists Beth McLeod and Samantha Roberts as well as other females that work at the station. These women shared their career paths with the girls as well as the importance of science and math in their success. After the station visit, this group traveled to Cleveland State University and had lunch in the student union. After lunch, the girls met with Dr. Daniel Winkler from CSU. He took this group to the Medical College on the campus and the girls visited a simulation center where student nurses learn to care for pediatric patients. The girls got to see the computer driven manikins in action. Then the group went to the Honors College at CSU and Dr. Winkler gave them a quick tour. He also introduced the girls to two successful females from the university. One was a professor who taught math classes and did research in the field of mathematics and the second was a woman professor who teaches classes at the Medical College and also works as a pediatric PA. Both of these women shared their career paths and again stressed the importance of taking higher level math and science classes. Throughout the day, all of the women who spoke with these girls encouraged the girls to work hard, follow their dreams and not to give up if their studies get difficult. It is hoped that this enrichment opportunity will enhance the girls’ awareness of the importance to higher level math and science classes as a door to many opportunities.
