During the month of December, Sunview’s kindergarten classes
went on a journey to learn about different cultures and traditions, as well as
how each are celebrated. Students got
the opportunity to learn about holidays, family traditions, customs that are
practiced, and experience some of the foods those cultures eat during these events.
Jasira McMillian, now a first grader who was once in Miss Johnson’s Class, her
Aunt Keesha and Grandmother Patricia even appeared on Fox 8 in the Morning to
spread the word about Kwanzaa, and to invite others to attend their celebration
which took place at Garfield Memorial Church, in South Euclid at 4:00p.m. on
December 26th.
During their festivities, Miss Johnson’s class was visited by Jasira and her family members who appeared on Fox 8 with her and shared with the class the traditions of Kwanzaa. The students enjoyed singing, making crafts, and learning the seven principles of Kwanzaa, which focus on unity, self-determination, collective work, responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. Sunview has continued to encouraged students to denounce bullying all year long through their behavior and actions, learning the principles of Kwanzaa gave the teachers another opportunity to teach students how to properly treat others and continue to encourage positivity amongst all students. What a great way to educate our students about other traditions and cultures, as well as promote acceptance at the same time.
