Students in SEL Schools Participate in Solar Eclipse Viewing

Students throughout the SEL Schools witnessed history by viewing the solar eclipse on August 21, 2017. Under the supervision of teachers and staff, students walked to open areas outside of their building and viewed the highly anticipated astronomical event through special glasses that meet national safety standards. Many classrooms incorporated the solar eclipse into their daily lessons, including Memorial Junior High, which used Google Classroom for engaging learning activities during the Intervention/Enrichment class period. Students at Greenview Upper Elementary created safe eclipse viewers by placing a piece of reflective tape over a sheet of paper and placing a small hole in the center of the tape. With their backs to the sun, the students could view the outline of the eclipse as it was projected onto another sheet of paper. The once-in-a-lifetime experience was a fun opportunity for students to engage in learning outside of the classroom.
