2017 Convocation Inspires SEL Teachers and Staff

The 2017 SEL Convocation officially welcomed back teachers and staff for the 2017-18 school year with an impressive performance by the Brush Marching Band, as well as inspiring remarks by special guest speaker Mark Anthony Garrett in the Performing Arts Center on Monday, August 14, 2017. Led by new band director John Shamp, the Brush Marching Band kicked-off the 2017 Convocation with a grand entrance into the auditorium, where they performed center-stage famous pop/rock hits, including Disco Inferno, Safety Dance and Rock N Roll All Nite, in addition to the school’s fight song. The band’s remarkable performance elicited cheers from those in attendance.

Superintendent Linda N. Reid followed with a brief presentation recognizing all new teachers and staff, as well as elected officials in attendance, including Lyndhurst Mayor Patrick A. Ward, South Euclid Schools Board President Stefanie Rhine, Board Vice-President Cassandra Jones and Board Member Erin Lee-Harris. Superintendent Reid then introduced author and professional speaker/trainer Mark Anthony Garrett, who shared how he overcame difficult life circumstances as a foster child with special needs through the help and encouragement of his third-grade teacher. During his remarks, Mr. Garrett stressed that “teachers are heroes” and encouraged all those in attendance to always remember that they have the power to change students’ lives forever and leave a positive legacy. The SEL Schools wish to thank Mark Anthony Garrett for sharing his message of encouragement and inspiration with our teachers and staff.

Finally, the district proudly welcomes back all teachers and staff for the 2017-18 school year. First day of classes for students is Wednesday, August 16, 2017.
