Brush Students’ Artwork to Be Displayed at Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition in Columbus

"Caged Innocence", Kiara Maclin, Grade 12 Photography

Artwork created by Senior Kiara Maclin and Junior Sun’shynne Moon McGhee was recently selected to be displayed at the Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition in Columbus. The Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition has been in existence for forty-seven years, and is dedicated to promoting the educational and artistic advancement of students in the State of Ohio. Kiara’s “Caged Innocence” (Photography) and Sun’shynne’s “Hard Times" (Printmaking) were originally submitted as part of a recent regional competition hosted at Brush High School, which served as one of the eleven regional judging sites. Brush art department instructors Hadley Conner and Sarah Curry coordinated the regional judging of over 800 pieces of art with the help of two judges consisting of local artists, gallery directors and educators, as well as an amazing group of student volunteers. Of the 11,500 regional entries from the 15 regions, approximately 2,500 are selected to enter the state judging competition. State jurors then select 300 for the actual exhibition, with 25 of the 300 chosen to receive the Governor's Award of Excellence. In addition, scholarships are offered to seniors by over 30 universities and colleges of art.

Approximately 150 pieces of student artwork from the regional competition at Brush advanced to state judging, fourteen of which, including those by Kiara Maclin and Sun’shynne Moon McGhee, were selected for display at the state show! This is quite an accomplishment, as both students will join a select group of peers from across the State of Ohio to have their artwork displayed in Columbus. In addition, 2017 marks the second year that Kiara’s artwork has been selected to be displayed at the Youth Art Exhibition! The Awards Ceremony will take place on Sunday, April 23rd beginning at 12:00 PM at The Riffe Center, Capitol Theatre located at 77 South High Street, Columbus, OH 43215.

The Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition will open after the awards ceremony on Sunday, April 23rd at 2:00 PM in the James A. Rhodes State Office Tower, which is located at 30 East Broad Street, Columbus, OH 43215.

Congratulations to Kiara Maclin and Sun’shynne Moon McGhee on your proud accomplishment!
