October is National Bullying Prevention Month and News 5 Cleveland recently visited Rowland Elementary along with other Cleveland-area schools as part of a segment spotlighting school-wide anti-bullying programs.  The implementation of the Conscious Discipline and Making a Difference programs have brought visible results and helped to create a positive building-wide culture at Rowland Elementary.  Conscious Discipline utilizes daily class meetings, friendly greetings and emphasizes making connections and building relationships with students.  In addition, students are encouraged to communicate how they feel and learn positive ways to deal with conflict.  News 5 Cleveland Reporter Homa Bash observed a first-grade classroom at Rowland implement the Conscious Discipline program and was very impressed with how well the students behaved.

Through a partnership with Making a Difference Consulting, the South Euclid Lyndhurst Schools has implemented the Making a Difference program for the past three years.  The initiative features monthly parent workshops, social skills groups, individual counseling and school-wide assemblies to help students communicate in a positive manner.  Principal Maleeka Bussey had the opportunity to be interviewed during the news segment and praised both Conscious Discipline and the Making a Difference program for bringing positive change to the building-wide culture at Rowland. The SEL Schools community can view the entire news segment featuring Rowland Elementary on the News 5 Cleveland website.  Congratulations to the teachers, administrators, parents, students and community members who have contributed to creating a positive school environment at Rowland Elementary!  Check out the segment on the News 5 website by clicking here.
