As part of its annual African-American Read-In Event, Rowland Elementary School hosted several guest readers on Wednesday, February 27, 2019. The event was part of the National African- American Read-In which seeks to raise awareness regarding African-American authors and incorporate literacy into Black History Month celebrations. District Administrator JC Commander, Greenview teacher Apryl Buchanan, Brush Varsity Football Coach Eddie Hall and Assistant Athletic Director JC Collins visited Preschool through Grade 3 classrooms to read a book of their choice that celebrates diversity in literature or a noteworthy figure in African-American history. 3rd graders in the MAC Ambassadors (Mentoring, Achievement, Community) program were also given the opportunity to visit various classrooms and read to younger students in PreK-1st grade. Students had a wonderful time interacting with the guest speakers and engaging in a discussion about the topics discussed in each book. The National African-American Read-In is the nation’s oldest event dedicated to celebrating diversity in literature and was founded in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English. A special thank-you to all guest readers and Rowland MAC Ambassadors for taking the time to teach our students the importance of literacy and celebrating diversity.
