More than 20 performing arts students recently traveled to Lyndhurst Community Center to entertain senior citizens as they dined for lunch as part of the ongoing partnership the SEL Schools maintains with the cities in our District. The talents of two student groups were on display, including the Brush High Jazz Effect and the Chamber Orchestra, demonstrating their performance skills to a captive audience of approximately 45 senior citizens. The Chamber Orchestra, led by Kristina Baric, included students playing violins, upright bass, the cello, drums and piano and performed a mix of classic tunes, and even their own rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody. Taking the stage after, the Jazz Effect proved their jazz-influenced vibe and capabilities by performing a wide variety of notable jazz and blues inspired tunes, including Take Five, Ain’t No Sunshine, Better Get it in Your Soul and In a Mellow Tone. Jazz Band Director John Shamp even showcased his trombone playing skills. Various solo opportunities drew rounds of applause from the senior citizens, who also tapped their feet and even stood up to dance in the aisleways of the gathering room. In all, the Brush High School performing arts students who comprise The Jazz Effect and the Chamber Orchestra did a fantastic job of entertaining senior citizens and representing the SEL Schools.
