Michael Cox, a Nuclear Engineer in the United States Navy, visited and spoke with Mr. Daniel Trentanelli’s Physics and AP Physics classes on Friday, January 12, 2018. A northeast Ohio native, Mr. Cox shared with the students his personal experience of completing the Navy Nuclear Power Training Command. While considered one of the world’s most challenging training programs, Mr. Cox stressed that his instructors provided continuous support and were eager to help every person succeed. He also shared about the various educational, career and financial benefits that are provided through the program, including the fact that nuclear trained sailors are selected for officer positions more than any other ranking. In addition, many graduates of the program have gone on to work for major companies such as Tesla, Google and Amazon. Mr. Cox was also joined by Petty Officer First Class Steven Hawthorne and Operations Specialist Nicole Thomas, both of whom are originally from the Greater Cleveland area. Students were given the chance to ask questions about the Nuclear Power Training program, and everyday life serving in the Navy. The presentation not only addressed the college and career readiness goals that are part of the district’s philosophy, but helped to connect students with professionals in science related fields, and gain greater clarity regarding their career and college goals.
