Rowland Elementary debuted its new school-wide ‘Bucket Filling’ initiative at its bi-weekly Monday Morning Meeting on Monday, November 6th. Led by School Counselor Lisa Artino, the initiative seeks to encourage students to be ‘bucket fillers’ by taking positive actions towards fellow peers such as words of kindness, encouragement, appreciation and respect. Several teachers dressed up in colorful and creative bucket costumes to get students excited about the new initiative. In addition, members from the SEL Schools Central Office, including Superintendent Linda N. Reid were in attendance to help show their support for the ‘bucket filling’ program. To model being a ‘bucket filler’, one student from each classroom along with their classroom teacher was called forward to the front of the gym. A positive comment written by the student about their teacher was read aloud for the entire staff and student body. The student then placed the card with the positive comment into a bucket held by their classroom teacher. Each classroom also received a bucket filled with directions for different activities and cards for students to use to fill each other’s ‘buckets’. The assembly concluded with Superintendent Reid and the other district administrators holding buckets at the front of the gym while students walked up and filled up their buckets with positive comments.
