8th Graders Discuss Constitutional Rights with Juvenile Court Magistrates

8th grade students at Memorial Junior High participated in a dynamic discussion regarding the U.S. Constitution with two magistrates from the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court on Thursday, November 16th.  The forum coincided with the students’ current U.S. History class unit on The Constitution, and centered on the Bill of Rights, which encompasses the first ten amendments.  Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court Magistrates Je’Nine Nickerson and Kay Ranke, who serve under Judge Denise N. Rini, used real world examples during the discussion with students to highlight how individual rights are protected under the law, as well as offered a glimpse into the legal system.  The guest speakers also encouraged students to make positive choices and think about the possible consequences of their decisions.  Students in attendance also had the opportunity to ask questions and gain real-world insight into how the law is applied inside the court room.  The SEL Schools wish to thank Magistrates Je’Nine Nickerson and Kay Ranke for taking the time to interact with, encourage and enlighten our students regarding the relationship between classroom content and real-world experiences.
