Greenview 6th Graders Take ‘Time Out’ to Read with NBA Referees

6th grade students in Mrs. Deana Crawford’s English/Language Arts class at Greenview Upper Elementary School had the unique opportunity to meet and read with official referees from the NBA on Tuesday, November 28, 2017.  The special visit was part of Scholastic’s Time Out for Reading Program, which seeks to promote student literacy, and was coordinated by Dr. Veronica Motley, Assistant Superintendent, Teaching and Learning for the SEL Schools.  As the only area school selected to participate in the program, each student in Mrs. Crawford’s class received four books from Scholastic.  Each donated book will serve as the topic of discussion during one of four reading sessions with a different set of NBA referees throughout the school year.  For the first visit, the students and referees read Taking Sides by Gary Soto, and concluded the class period with an Q & A session.  The students greatly enjoyed the interactive learning experience, and look forward to taking more ‘time outs’ to read during the school year!
