It’s math, it’s strategy...it’s logic!
It’s math, it’s strategy...it’s logic!

The South Euclid Lyndhurst students in the STEP UP program do it again! This time it is with a math competition. The Greenview and Memorial Math Equations Team competed in the city wide tournament hosted by the Educational Service Center of Cuyahoga County and as a district finished second overall!

The outcome was impressive as the fourth and fifth grade team of Michael Butler, Andrew Schlegal, Dayne Gray, Jaden Bates, Spencer Presley, and Emily Drennon finished in 2nd place! The seventh and eighth grade team of Josh Laurienzo, Peighton Taylor, Nick Zolikoff, Ikenna Okura, Alex Emmert, and Alex Neyman also finished second in the Junior High Division!

Individual awards went to Andrew Schlegal who finished first, and Michael Butler who finished second in their division. Seventh grader Peighton Taylor had a second place finish missing first by two one-hundredths of a point;  and not to be outdone eighth grader Josh Laurienzo finished second as well. Josh has played for four years and has never failed to place! It is an honor to our educational community to have these students compete so well.

Equations is a math competition where you roll several dice with numbers or symbols, create a “goal” (the answer to the equation); then take turns moving the cubes into either forbidden, possible, and required categories, all the while keeping your equation to reach the goal secret. When you see someone else make a mistake, you call a flub (there are several types of flubs). Then you have to prove yourself right or the opponent wrong.

Equations explores a broad range of math topics including elementary arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponentiation and root operation as well as logarithms, fractions, decimals, percents, variables, algebra, functions and more.

Congratulations SEL students.  We are proud of you!
