Sunview Third Graders Creatively Raise Money by Selling Pet Supplies!

Third grade Sunview Elementary School students sold hand-made pet and puppy supplies during their respective lunch periods, as part of a grand effort to properly educate students on economics and the value of producing goods in need, and donating the proceeds to a worthy cause. Directed by elementary teacher Mrs. Kim Erwin, who has developed a curriculum whereby students take out a loan of $300 for materials, and develop varying production systems, including an assembly line and individual production protocols, pet supplies have been made and are currently being ‘sold’ on the market. After repayment of the loan, all proceeds go to benefit Marilyn’s House, a local non-profit organization which rescues dogs from puppy mills, or ones which have been abandoned or abused. Some of the items that have been hand-crafted for pets include, cat chasers, scarves for dogs (and humans too) and pull-toys for pets.

In addition, this past Saturday, these same third graders set up shop outside Pet Supplies Plus in Lyndhurst to sell some of these goods, and extraordinarily raised more than $750! Congratulations to the students, appropriately named The Sunview Pet Lovers, and to Mrs. Erwin for such a clever instructional component to their elementary education.
