Rowland Elementary Students Receive Hands-On Science Experience

Second grade students of Mr. Paul Kijinski at Rowland Elementary School were given the opportunity to participate in two highly engaging science opportunities this week. Cleveland-area engineer and meteorologist, Dan Jakubowski visited the students and shared his passion for predicting the weather, from which a great deal was learned about meteorology. Mr. Jakubowski provided an animated presentation, which was followed by the opportunity for students to handle weather instruments, such as barometers and hail gauges.

In another engaging and collaborative exercise the very next day, two parent volunteers, Mr. Rob Poelking and Mrs. Beth Schuster assisted with a project on forces and motion performed by Mr. Kijinski, who is also a former US Air Force missile officer. The presentation began by demonstrating the fundamentals of Newton’s Laws of Motion, and then, the students worked in trios to assemble and launch Alka-Seltzer rockets that all succeeded in hitting the 15-foot high ceiling! The students generated a great deal of excitement and energy, and the district is pleased to feature such creative and instructive curricular exercises.
