Greenview Fifth Graders Receive an Extra-Special Art Lesson from Area Experts
Students at Greenview Upper Elementary School were captivated this week by a unique opportunity for trained, expert volunteers to present ancient Egyptian artifacts in Mrs. Susan Foley’s regular art classes. The program, called Art to Go, is sponsored by the Cleveland Museum of Art whereby trained volunteers, who are instructed on the background and nature of varying pieces of ancient and modern artwork, go on the road to share such exhibits with others.
Mrs. Foley, who has led this effort for the past 13 years, has taken advantage of special grants from the Legacy Village Lyndhurst Community and also funding from the PTA to help offset the $100/visit costs required for each presentation. Inviting guests in approximately twenty times per school year, students listen to these volunteers speak about specific insights of the artwork and how artifacts reflect the culture of their respective time periods. This year, Mrs. Foley has scheduled more visits than usual, inviting the Art to Go program in for students thirty-eight times. Students pass around artwork, ask questions and participate in the presentation. The volunteers have been trained specifically for this program by the Cleveland Museum of Art, and are many times former instructors who are familiar with classroom environments.
