Greenview Teacher’s Inquiry Results in More than 500 Donated Books for SEL Students

More than 500 students will receive their very own hard-bound book this coming school year, to take home and use for reading purposes, due to the pursuit of a book grant from “First Book,” by Greenview Learning Resource Teacher Hedy Laverdiere.

After learning about First Book, a foundation from Washington, DC whose mission is to end illiteracy among the nation’s students, from a Greenview colleague, Ms. Laverdiere made an application to the organization for SEL Students. Recognizing that not all students have books at home, she selected among book reviews from the American Library Association and amazon.com, to pick appropriate books for her fourth
and fifth graders. During the middle part of the summer, Ms. Laverdiere was informed that she had been awarded books for students free of charge, and picked them up in Cleveland just a few weeks ago. Because of her dedication to her students and a belief that reading is critical for learning, approximately 540 students in the fourth and fifth grade will take their very own book home.

The SEL Schools thank Ms. Hedy Laverdiere for her pursuit of books for her students!
