Rowland Staff Celebrate African-American History in Creative Fashion

On Monday, March 3rd, Rowland staff members celebrated African-American history in creative fashion by using costumes and props to portray influential African-American figures. The special presentation took place during the weekly PBIS assembly from 9 AM to 10 AM in the Rowland gym. It was created as a fun and informative way for students and staff to celebrate Black History Month. During the presentation, staff members delivered in-character portrayals of a specific African-American figure by sharing important facts about the individual’s life, while wearing fun and creative costumes. Notable past and present African-American figures represented during the presentation included former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, former Indians player and Hall of Famer Larry Doby, as well as singer and entertainer Beyonce.

In addition to the special presentation, Rowland teachers and staff also took time to recognize those students who were “caught being bright”. BRIGHT is part of the Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) program, and encourages students to “be honest, respond appropriately, improve through goals, give respect, help others, and try their best” every day. Over forty students received BRIGHT slips as a reward for their positive behavior. Students participating in the 100 Book Challenge were also recognized for their achievements. Approximately twenty-six students received medals for reading an additional twenty-five hours.

Congratulations to all of the students who were recognized during the assembly! Keep up the great work!
