Memorial Junior High Students Participate in Activity with Cleveland Clinic's Cole Eye Institute

Memorial Junior High seventh grade students in the classes of Mrs. Angela Auletta recently participated in a highly interactive class presentation by two representatives from the Cleveland Clinic’s Cole Eye Institute, all as a means to reinforce a non-fiction reading lesson with an emphasis on paraphrasing. The reading material was an example of medical literature on the eye, which was technical in some respect, but was intended to be bolstered with the additional live demonstration.

The presentation, provided by Giovana Riberio, MD and Maral Malekzadeh, included an in-depth discussion about material that students read prior to their visit, two videos that included various eye procedures and surgeries and two interactive exercises, one of which contained the dissection of the eye of a pig. The purpose of the presentation was to provide real-life enrichment of material that had just been read, in order to encourage increased comprehension of the material. The two presenters are interns with Dr. Krueger at the Cole Eye Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, and directed a total of four presentations to various seventh grade language art classes for Mrs. Auletta.

Congratulations on integrating a creative, but meaningful supplement, to the seventh graders at Memorial Junior High!
