On Friday, May 6th, Memorial Junior High inducted thirty-two seventh grade students and one eighth grade student into the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). The ceremony was held in the New Gym and was attended by parents, school faculty and fellow students. The talented Memorial Junior High School Orchestra began the festivities by performing a processional, followed by introductory remarks by Principal Kathybel Ortiz. Lyndhurst Mayor Patrick Ward served as the guest speaker, and encouraged the student inductees to embody the five pillars of the NJHS, including leadership, citizenship, service, character and scholarship. The ceremony also featured remarks by the Memorial NJHS officers, including President Sloane Boukobza, Vice-President Marina J. Hess, Secretary Amber See and Treasurer Anala Valenzuela. After their individual remarks, each officer took part in the Traditional Candle Lighting Ceremony. Co-Advisers Mrs. Homrock and Mrs. Culliton then led the students in reciting an induction pledge and presented each individual student a certificate of membership.
As part of their membership requirements, the newly inducted NJHS members must maintain a high grade point average, as well as commit to volunteering in their school or community during the 2016-2017 school year. Those students who had completed one-year of membership in the NJHS were recognized at the ceremony for their contributions as well.
