2nd and 3rd grade students at Sunview Elementary had an exciting opportunity to meet individuals from a variety of professions during Career Day on Friday, April 22nd. During the program, students rotated to different classrooms where they participated in a twenty-minute presentation by one of the featured speakers. Each student received a packet containing specific questions to ask each presenter and space to write down their answers. During the presentations, each speaker shared about their profession, including their main responsibilities and what motivated them to pursue their specific career.
Superintendent Linda N. Reid delivered a fun and interactive presentation, which involved asking student volunteers to pick an object from a table at the front of the classroom that represented one of her responsibilities as district superintendent. Superintendent Reid then shared with the students how each object related to her position. Additional speakers included Clarence Henderson from Henderson Contracting Company, LLC, who displayed various hand-held tools and explained how they were used to complete construction projects. Will Stanford, an investigator from the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD), detailed his role in enforcing codes which protect the environment. Mr. Stanford also explained how the NEORSD tests the water quality of streams and other bodies of water, bringing in containers of fish and other organisms which help measure the level of pollution. SEL School District Chef Kevin Needham shared about his passion for cooking and how he received his training to work in the culinary and food service industry. Chef Needham gave the students a special treat as well, serving them fresh berry smoothies which he made during the presentation. Officer Crown from the Lyndhurst Police Department brought along his K-9 partner Aries, and shared how they work together on a daily basis. Lyndhurst Mayor Patrick A. Ward described his responsibilities as an elected official and stressed the importance of being a good citizen. The Career Day program also featured Sunview parent Jimmy Olulami, who in addition to working as an architect, shared about his passion for music. A multi-instrumentalist, Mr. Olulami serves as the music director at his church, has performed at various venues and recently recorded an instrumental album. To close his presentation, Mr. Olulami played a short song on a trumpet for the students.
