Greenview Celebrates Opening of Oasis Reading Room

On Wednesday, February 24th, students, staff, board members, elected officials, as well as representatives from various community organizations filled the Greenview Upper Elementary Gym to celebrate the opening of the new Oasis Reading Room. Featuring numerous print and audio books, as well as comfy bean bag furniture, the Oasis Reading Room will be available to all students and serve as a space dedicated to promoting the importance of literacy. The assembly featured remarks by South Euclid Mayor Georgine Welo and Superintendent Linda N. Reid which stressed the importance of literacy and how it can help students achieve their goals. Additional speakers included Pastor Scott Blevins from Garfield Memorial Church and Luis Antonio Gonzalez from Up With People, a worldwide organization featuring students and staff from twenty-two different countries which promotes the sharing of cultures and values through the arts and service opportunities. Following the assembly, four Greenview student ambassadors joined Mayor Welo, Superintendent Reid, Greenview Principal Kelly Murphy and other guest speakers for a special ribbon cutting ceremony in the Oasis Reading Room.

The Oasis Reading Room is the product of community partnerships, a central part of the district’s strategic plan. Volunteers from Garfield Memorial Church and Up With People, as well as students from Notre Dame College spent several days painting, decorating and setting up furniture inside the room. Paint supplies were donated by Sherwin-Williams, while all print and audio books were donated by Scholastic. The South Euclid Lyndhurst Schools wish to thank all participating organizations and volunteers for supporting student learning through the creation of the Oasis Reading Room.
