Brush students
Dominic Del Balso, Scott Karn and Hailey Hoyat put their scientific and
collaborative skills to the test at the 13th Annual Buckeye Regional
FIRST Robotics Competition, which took place March 20-22 at Cleveland State
University’s Wolstein Center in downtown Cleveland. This year’s competition was the culmination
of six weeks of preparation by fifty-four teams representing high schools from
across the state of Ohio and the nation.
The Brush team was no exception, as all three students spent hundreds of
hours working together to construct and program their robot. Standing at five-feet tall, the robot
featured a mechanical arm which allowed it to pick up, hold and throw a large
beach ball. Each team’s robot competed
in a game called Aerial Assist, which involved two teams of three robots each
competing against each other in an enclosed area, with a truss suspended over
the playing field. The object of the
game was to score as many goals as possible during a set amount of time.
The annual
competition is organized nationally by FIRST, which means For Inspiration and
Recognition of Science and Technology. The
program is designed to provide students the opportunity to improve their
science and technology knowledge, build self-confidence and promote leadership
and life skills. The regional
competition was sponsored by several Northeast Ohio companies and
organizations, including NASA Glenn Research Center and Cleveland-based
Rockwell Automation, which joined together to sponsor the Brush High School
robotics team.
Congratulations
to Dominic Del Balso, Scott Karn and Hailey Hoyat for proudly representing the
South Euclid-Lyndhurst Schools at the thirteenth Annual Buckeye Regional
FIRST Robotics Competition. To view
