Greenview Upper Elementary School STEP UP program participants showed off their research skills and innovative pursuits earlier this week by devising their own respective inventions, and showcasing them for judges and visitors to the building. Performing research with the US Patent’s Office, and then developing inventions, SEL’s STEP UP program includes students who are cognitively gifted, and who set aside time as part of their program to enhance their creativity skills by developing real world inventions. This invention competition featured approximately 30 Greenview students in grades 4 through 6 who developed such creative ideas as a new padded slipper with Neoprene, a toothbrush which electronically applied toothpaste, a portable fish tank and a modified toaster which makes toasted peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. In a sense, the upper cafeteria at Greenview was transformed into an “idea-center” with judges on-hand from Rockwell Automation, a student from Notre Dame and a professor from Case Western Reserve University. Congratulations to our STEP UP students who take the time to research and invent such innovative ideas and have the professionalism to explain their ideas to others. Winners from this competition will move on to the Northeast Ohio Invention Convention held on May 2, 2015 at Cleveland State University.
