Socks for Shelters

Student members of the National Junior Honor Society at Memorial Junior High recently completed a community-based project where nearly 300 pairs of socks were collected and donated to a local homeless shelter. Called “Socks for Shelters,” NJHS students canvassed the building seeking sock donations since the organization learned that clothes and coats were regularly donated, but not footwear. Specifically, socks were donated to Project Hope, a dormitory-type shelter where guests can stay up to 90 days. The sock-drive took place between January 21 and February 4.

In addition, just prior to the donation being made to the homeless shelter, a fire tragedy left an SEL family without certain basic-need items, and this group provided six unopened packages of socks to them. A special word of congratulations goes out to Mr. Balcam’s homeroom, which won a donut breakfast for gathering 69 pairs of new socks.

The SEL Schools congratulates the National Junior Honor Society and advisor's Mrs. Angela Auletta and Mrs. Kristin Orsagos, for rising to the challenge of meeting other people’s needs.
