This is a reminder there is No School on Monday, March 16th, 2020, for all students. Monday is a regular workday for all employees. Teachers and administration will be finalizing instructional plans by the end of the workday, Monday. The SEL District will provide a link for parents to access their child’s assignments.

Below are some SEL miscellaneous updates:

The link will be sent to all parents and will be available on the district’s website. If you prefer to have a paper version of your child’s assignments, paper versions will be available at your child’s school on Tuesday, March 17th from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Wednesday, March 18th from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

College Credit Plus: The deadline for applications for the College Credit Plus program is April 1, 2020, according to the Ohio Department of Education website. Please email the completed application to your child’s school counselor.

Athletics: We received a guidance document from the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) regarding the Spring sports season. Per this guidance document, “A MANDATORY no contact period is in effect for all school-sponsored sports, March 17 – April 5, 2020. Additionally, there will be a mandatory shutdown of all facilities used for the purpose of conducting athletic activities from March 16 – April 5, 2020.”

Food Service: I expect to receive guidance on Monday regarding the Federal Breakfast and Lunch Program. The South Euclid Lyndhurst Schools is looking to offer a “grab and go” option for students. I will provide more information tomorrow.

Updates from the Ohio Department of Education (Dated March 14, 2020)

Attendance: ODE recognizes that attempting to track student attendance under such circumstances would be extremely complicated. Consequently, students will be deemed to be in attendance during the non-spring-break periods included in the three-week closure.

State Testing and SAT/ACT: The most important consideration at this time should be the health and safety of students and of the community. Obviously, no state testing will take place during the closure period. The Ohio Department of Education will take appropriate action to adjust the state’s testing schedule (both in terms of administration and reporting) to accommodate the three-week closure. The intention is to be as flexible as possible. We will be asking the U.S. Department of Education for the maximum flexibility in accommodating the current circumstances.

Many, but not all, juniors have completed the state-sponsored SAT or ACT. The Department of Education is committed to working with vendors to identify additional testing opportunities. Additional information regarding assessment timelines and the return of results will be shared when available.

Graduation – Class of 2020: A reminder, at this point in time this closure will not impact seniors expecting to graduate. We have been given no indication that the school year will be extended. Ensuring that the Class of 2020 is on track to graduate is an important priority. Schools, seniors and their parents/guardians should take this opportunity to review the status of each senior to determine the extent to which the student has met graduation requirements for the Class of 2020. Should the current situation change, the Department of Education will provide additional information. Our commitment is to provide reasonable flexibility in the interest of doing what is right for students.

I realize that I included a lot of information in this letter. There are so many details to share and I want you to have as much information as you need. I will continue to correspond with you in the days and weeks ahead.

Again, I sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as we respond to the emerging, rapidly evolving situation regarding COVID-19. This is an unprecedented time. I am certain that we will all pull together as a school community to ensure that our students and their families, as well as our neighbors and friends are healthy and safe.

Sincerely,
Linda N. Reid
Superintendent
