6th Graders Collaborate with Teacher on Real-World Writing Project

a

6th grade students at Greenview Campus recently collaborated with Learning Resource Teacher Mr. Paul Kijinski on a real-world writing project that has the exciting potential to become a published picture book! In addition to his career as an educator, Mr. Kijinski is also a published author of several written works, the majority including middle-grade level novels. Over the summer, Mr. Kijinski began his current writing project in partnership with a nonprofit organization. Titled The Little Millionaires of Slavic Village, Mr. Kijinski hopes to publish the manuscript as a picture book with all proceeds to be donated in support of youth programs in the greater Cleveland area.

Mr. Kijinski asked students to identify passages in the manuscript that should be illustrated and to explain their reasoning. The activity also tied into Ohio’s Learning Standards by requiring students to use technology to publish writing, collaborate with others, and demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills. The 6th graders were excited to collaborate with Mr. Kijinski and provided detailed and thoughtful feedback on the writing project. Fantastic work by all of our 6th graders, and a special thank you to Mr. Kijinski for providing our students the opportunity to engage in real-world learning!
