Superintendent's Message - Wednesday, July 1, 2020

a

Our Administrative Team and Board of Education are deciding how best to reopen school. Rest assured, we will be ready. We are working diligently to come up with plans addressing different scenarios that the new school year might bring. Our plans are being made with necessary precautions to support the safety and health of all of our students and staff. Our framework for returning to school is directed by guidelines set by local, state, and federal governments and public health officials.

“Think Tank” meetings began in late May and are ongoing. State Superintendent Paolo DeMaria, advised school superintendents to “Plan for the worst, hope for the best, and be prepared to pivot on a dime”. To that end, we have been working through multiple scenarios as related to the reopening of the school district. Additionally, as we anticipate social distancing to be a requirement in the coming school year, district administrators have measured every classroom and meeting space in all school buildings to determine the capacity for each room.

The release of Governor DeWine’s guidance document will further define our district’s plan for the 2020-2021 school year. I am hopeful that the majority of our students will be back on our school campuses, however, please know that we will provide virtual learning opportunities for students whose parents desire for their child/children to continue to learn remotely during this ongoing pandemic. It is our intention to be as flexible as possible and as responsive as possible to our families’ needs. We are asking each family to complete the attached survey by July 8th.

The intent of this survey is for individual families to provide the district a general idea of what each family may want or need with the reopening of schools.

Upon review of the guidance document from Governor DeWine, and after we refine our plan for the reopening of our school district, we will send another survey to SEL parents. The next survey will define the school schedule for each grade band. Parents will be asked to declare their intentions with regard to their child/children’s “learning assignment” for the first semester of the 2020-2021 school year. Meaning, I will ask for your decision regarding whether your child will return to our school campuses or whether it is your intention for your child to remain learning remotely for the first semester of school. More information on the new SEL Learning platform will be available after we review the number of families who are interested in this platform. I will also ask for feedback regarding your child’s transportation needs to and from school and if you have a need for before and after school childcare. Your submission of this information is critical so that we can move forward in our planning.

Thank you for your partnership, support and voice as we develop our district’s plan for the reopening of school.
