Greenview Metrics Olympics Competition

olympics

5th Grade students used metrics lessons and standards to further their knowledge of vital skills and tools for later in life, all while participating in an exciting and meaningful Olympics Competition. Using the standards to identify questions that can be answered through scientific investigations as well as appropriate mathematics tools and techniques to gather data, 5th graders participated in a handful of outdoor stations during 2 days of learning. Meter sticks were used to measure distances after they were estimated. A paper plate-discus event, cotton ball shot-put and drinking straw javelin throw were just some of the activities that all promoted measuring distances. Teachers used laptops to broadcast their station activity to the online students, who were also actively engaged in the unit, and checked-in with students every 10 minutes or so to check for understanding.  Students used the data from this group to fill out their on-line lab data sheets. The 5th Grade team at Greenview did a fantastic job of promoting understanding of important concepts with creative and fun learning activities. Great job to everyone involved.
