Stop the Hate Essay Contest Finalists
stop
Congratulations to Brush seniors Lillie Alshiekhtaha and AJ Shorts on being named finalists for the Stop the Hate essay contest sponsored by the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage in collaboration with non-profit organization Lake Erie Ink. As finalists, both students were awarded a $1,000 scholarship and will compete against other Northeast Ohio students to receive a $20,000 scholarship grand prize. In the fall of 2020, Lillie and AJ, along with peers in American Literature, Modern Literature, and AP English Literature classes at Brush High School, participated in the Youth Speak Out Essay Writing Workshop. The workshop is part of the Stop the Hate program, an immersive anti-bias learning experience that encompasses history, literacy, and arts-based education. Participating students had the special opportunity to receive professional writing instruction from Lake Erie Ink teaching artists. Afterwards, students wrote and submitted personal essays sharing how they have witnessed or experienced acts of injustice or discrimination, how those experiences impacted them, and how they reacted or plan to respond in order to promote justice in their community.

Once again, congratulations to Lillie Alshiekhtaha and AJ Shorts on their proud accomplishment and for their dedication to being agents of positive change in the community!
