Twenty-three Brush students had the opportunity to virtually listen to and engage with leading professionals in a variety of career fields at the Black Male Summit 2021, on Tuesday, March 30th. Each participating student was invited to attend the virtual program in the Media Center after previously expressing interest in the event. Hosted by The University of Akron, the Black Male Summit seeks to promote best practices and innovative strategies designed to foster career development and success for African American males through a national platform. The morning session featured a panel discussion by members from the African American Male Learning Community (AAMLC), including Darnell D. Davis Jr., M.P.A.; Terance T. Eaton; Nathaniel A. Huff, M.S.Ed.; and Jarrell Lemons, M.Ed.

Keynote Speaker Dr. Cornel West, Professor of Practice of Public Philosophy, Harvard University, and Professor Emeritus, Princeton University, began the afternoon session by delivering inspiring remarks before engaging in a Q & A session with participating students. For the final main activity, students selected from one of six breakout sessions focused on a specific career area of interest, including, law, pre-health, education, engineering, and psychology. Each session was led by career professionals and University of Akron graduates who shared about the challenges and rewards in their particular field of study.

All participating students appreciated the wealth of career-related insight and information shared during the Virtual Black Male Summit. Special thanks to Melissa Thompson, Assistant Superintendent – Student Services and Strategic Partnerships, and Maleeka Bussey, Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Coordinator for their efforts in making this impactful learning opportunity available for Brush students.  The SEL Schools congratulates all participating students as they continue to strive to make a positive difference and develop their leadership skills.
