To help mark the conclusion of Black History Month, students in grades K-6 in the South Euclid Lyndhurst Schools participated in a variety of African American Read-In events during the week of February 24th, 2020.  The Read-In is the nation’s first and oldest event dedicated to celebrating diversity in literature.  On Wednesday, February 26th, twenty MAC Ambassadors from Brush High School, Memorial Junior High School and Rowland Elementary participated in the Read-In at Rowland by visiting PreK-3 classrooms during the morning to read a book of their choice that celebrated diversity in literature or a noteworthy figure in African American history.

On Friday, February 28th, 5th and 6th graders from Greenview Middle School gathered with teachers to read for thirty minutes a selected work titled Hidden Figures.  Written by African American author Margot Lee Shetterly, Hidden Figures tells the amazing true story of African American female mathematicians at NASA who played a pivotal role in America’s greatest space achievements.  Greenview would like to thank Pupil Services Director Melissa Thompson for providing copies of Hidden Figures as well as teachers Apryl Buchanan, Kathy Everson and Kim Thomas for coordinating various events during Black History month.

On behalf of the South Euclid Lyndhurst Schools, thank you to all K-6 students and staff for celebrating the importance of literacy and diversity.
