Brush Football Takes Build the Bridge Challenge
aj

Members of the Brush Varsity Football team and coaching staff proudly joined representatives from nearly thirty other NEO high schools at the “Build the Bridge Challenge” hosted at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, OH on Tuesday, June 23, 2020. Organized by Cleveland Heights Assistant Football Coach Kahari Hicks, the “Build the Bridge Challenge” provided an opportunity for head coaches and two players from each participating school to unite around a shared love of the game of football while engaging in open dialogue on issues related to racism and equality. Brush High School was represented by Head Varsity Coach Edmund Hall, Quarterback Anthony (AJ) Shorts and Defensive End Da’ Quan “DQ” Ross. The program was conducted with appropriate social distancing measures and included moderated sessions about race, as well as an opportunity for participants to explore the various Hall of Fame exhibits.

A second part of the “Build the Bridge Challenge” is expected to begin once the State of Ohio and OHSAA approve Phase 3 of summer athletic activities. The goal is to pair predominantly white schools with more racially diverse schools, public and private, and provide a shared experience that includes friendly competition in a 7 on 7 passing scrimmage, shared meal, and most importantly, the opportunity to build bonds, recognize differences and celebrate what they share in common. Players and coaches from Brush High School and Lake Catholic in Mentor will join together soon to participate in the next phase of this historic initiative. On behalf of the SEL Schools, thank you to the Brush High School Football program for taking the “Build the Bridge Challenge” and demonstrating a commitment to racial justice and unity.
