CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Athletics has announced the hiring of Matt O'Neill as the head coach of the diving program. O'Neill joins the Crimson after a three-and-a-half year tenure with American Flyers Diving and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

"We are thrilled to welcome Matt O'Neill as our head coach for diving," said Bob Scalise, The John D. Nichols '53 Family Director of Athletics. "Matt has a strong background developing student-athletes, and we believe he will be a terrific leader and mentor for our divers at Harvard."

"I am honored and excited to be the next Harvard diving coach," O'Neill said. "With the recent success of both the men's and women's programs, along with the team's young talent, I look forward to partnering with the coaching staff to bring the programs to the next level. Having the opportunity to work with exceptional student-athletes and help them grow will be the ultimate reward."

O'Neill led American Flyers Diving to a fifth-place overall finish, including a victory for the boys team, at the 2018 USA Diving Junior National Championship, including a pair of individual national champions. Over his four years with the club, he coached three different national champions. He was also the head coach at Case Western Reserve from 2015-19, where he mentored one All-American and University Athletic Association Diver of the Year.

"We are excited to welcome Matt O'Neill to the Harvard swimming and diving family," said Stephanie Wriede Morawski '92, The Costin Family Head Coach for Harvard Women's Swimming & Diving, and Kevin Tyrrell, The Ulen-Brooks Endowed Coach for Harvard Men's Swimming & Diving.  "His experience on both the club and collegiate level combined with his enthusiasm, energy and positivity will enable us to recruit and develop student-athletes at the highest level."

O'Neill was a four-year varsity diver at West Virginia, and was the program record holder in the one-meter and three-meter springboards until 2017. He received his bachelor's degree from West Virginia in 2013 in Athletic Coaching Education.

"Matt is a true team player who understands that collaboration between coaches, swimmers and divers is necessary to achieve success in all areas of life," continued Wriede Morawski and Tyrrell. "More importantly, Matt truly cares for his athletes and supports both their academic and athletic goals."

Both Harvard swimming and diving programs repeated as Ivy League champions in 2018-19, with the men claiming their third-consecutive title.
