Fox 8 News Spotlights SEL Schools
Fox 8
Conscious Discipline, an innovative and science-based social-emotional learning tool utilized by the South Euclid Lyndhurst Schools was recently spotlighted by Fox-8 News. As part of the Conscious Discipline program, the SEL Schools recently introduced Safe Spaces in every K-3 classroom where students can follow a 5-step process listed on nearby posters to help them calm down when they are upset, anxious, or feeling other strong emotions. In doing so, students can practice self-regulation by moving from the strong emotional state triggered by the lower part of the brain to being able to problem solve and learn which are controlled by the front part of the brain. All K-3 teachers and staff have been trained in utilizing Conscious Discipline and the five-steps associated with the Safe Space program. In addition, each elementary building has its own Safe Space for staff members to utilize to de-stress before going back into the classroom.
Fox-8 News Anchor/Reporter Jennifer Jordan took the opportunity to interview Rowland Elementary 2nd grader Josiah Morgan, Lisa Artino, K-3 School Counselor, Conscious Discipline, and Rowland Assistant Principal Sylvia Marshall about the Safe Spaces and their positive impact on students and staff. The Fox-8 interview at Rowland Elementary is available for viewing online. The SEL Schools plans to implement Safe Spaces at all other school buildings in the district to provide students and staff with this helpful social-emotional learning tool.
