Reading at Rowland Elementary
Reading at Rowland
Teaching and celebrating literacy is a crucial part of academic growth and instilling a love of reading in students. At Rowland Elementary School, students demonstrate their love of reading in a variety of ways. The students enjoy checking out books from Mrs. Treer to read independently in the classroom during “Read to Self” activities. The students select their own book to increase their love of reading and build confidence. The “Read to Self” activities help to create a classroom environment where all students feel that they can be successful.

During the month of February, Rowland participated in its first PTA sponsored Read-A-Thon! To help prepare for the event, students collected books during the month of January to ensure that all students had access to books to read at home. Participating families worked with their child to set a personal reading goal of how many minutes they planned to read and shared the total with supporters. Students filled out and turned in a pledge ticket for every donation received. While pursuing their individual reading goals, students could read independently or aloud to family members. Each ticket was entered into a drawing to win a variety of fun prizes including gift cards to Barnes and Noble, Pizza Hut, and Baskin Robins, in addition to a Cleveland Museum of Art Family Membership. The top students in each grade level with the most minutes read received a personalized Rowland Rockstar Reader t-shirt, while the top classes at each grade will earn a pizza party! All funds raised during the Read-A-Thon will benefit the Rowland PTA and go towards providing programs that enhance student learning. Thank you to our phenomenal Rowland Families and PTA for helping to make the first Read-A-Thon a success!
