Costco Supports Reading at Rowland

One of the core beliefs of the SEL Schools as stated in the district’s Destination 2023 Strategic Plan is that education is the responsibility of the entire community. As a result, the district partners with local businesses, community organizations and volunteers to help our students learn, grow, and achieve. Through a partnership with Costco Wholesale in Mayfield Heights, third-grade students at Rowland Elementary are receiving extra reading practice. As part of a nationwide program sponsored by Costco, local Costco stores select a home school in the community for staff volunteers to visit and work with students one day a week for twelve weeks. Rowland third grade teachers identified a group of eight to ten students who would benefit from additional reading support to participate in the program.

The first six-week session began on Tuesday, November 1st, with Costco volunteers visiting a regular third grade classroom for forty-five minutes. During each weekly visit, volunteers work separately with two small groups of four-five students for approximately twenty minutes. Each trained volunteer employs a variety of learning activities and games designed to improve auditory processing and foundational reading skills. Beginning on January 24, 2023, the volunteer tutors will begin a second block of tutoring for six weeks using the same strategy as above with a new group of eight to ten students.

The SEL Schools would like to thank the staff at Costco in Mayfield Heights for partnering with the district in support of our students!
