Students Study Plants with Hydroponic System

Students at Sunview Elementary are learning about different garden plants through a unique, hands-on experience using a Lettuce Grow Vertical Hydroponic System purchased with a grant by the Sunview PTA. Each week, students help to provide nutrients to the plants and watch with excitement to see how quickly the many different plant varieties are growing. The hydroponic garden features multiple types of lettuce, including Classic Butter, romaine, and Crunchy Leaf, as well as other leafy vegetables such as spinach, Blue kale, and red Bok Choy. Fresh herbs include Italian parsley, dill, and garlic chives, in addition to delicious produce including Cherry tomatoes and strawberries. PH level kits are also available for classes to test the PH level of each plant. Unlike a traditional garden which requires plant roots to seek out nutrients in the soil, hydroponic gardens have nutrients dissolved in water surrounding the roots. The quick and easy access to nutrients enables the plants to grow big and beautiful very quickly, making some of the garden’s bounty ready to cut! Thank you to the Sunview PTA for purchasing this wonderful learning resource for our students to enjoy!
