To the Class of 2020:
Each school year the culminating events for seniors to look forward to are prom and commencement. Understanding these events are important to our seniors, families, and staff members, we will exhaust all attempts to host prom and commencement. With the closure of school due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we secured alternate dates for both prom and commencement. Prom was moved back to June 18th and commencement was moved to June 24th.
Last week, Governor DeWine announced that "the gathering of significant numbers of people is a dangerous situation." During the same news conference it was announced schools would be closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.
Since securing alternate dates for both events, we have been informed by each venue that these dates will not work, due to the governor's orders on large gatherings. In an effort to prioritize the health needs of our students, we will honor each student in a safe and responsible manner. The Class of 2020 end of year events, including prom and commencement, will not occur in the traditional setting as in past years. Though our formal prom event has been canceled, we are working on how we can provide opportunities for our seniors to show off their prom attire.
Regarding commencement, I am working on TWO formats for honoring our seniors. Our first format consists of an outdoor commencement program, which will occur at Korb Field on the last Saturday of May. Please note, this format will not occur in a large group setting. For this format to occur, I need absolute support from our seniors, families, and staff members. The program at Korb would follow all safety protocols of social distancing, with limited number of people in confined areas, and etc. The number of family members permitted to attend will be limited, and is yet to be determined. The second format for commencement is a virtual program, should the outdoor format not work. Specific dates and times for the virtual program are to be determined.
Specific details for prom and commencement events continue to be developed. Each day there are new developments, which pose us to be flexible in how we celebrate our seniors. Please look for additional announcements outlining specifics such as dates and times. Arrangements for pick-up of caps and gowns are being finalized, as is our anticipated commencement program. A senior class meeting is being scheduled remotely through google hangout, in which details will be shared. A follow up letter will then be shared with parents.
The annual seniors awards program is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, May 13th. This event will occur remotely, and students being honored will be invited to a google hangout meeting next week. Information will be provided for families of students being recognized.
If you have questions or concerns, please contact my office. I feel horrible for our students, staff, and SEL families as we continue to experience the effects of the COVID pandemic. However, safety and health will always come first.
