Preschool Families Attend Polar Party

Shortly before the start of Winter Break, students in our preschool classrooms invited their families to school for a Polar Party!  For several weeks prior, the preschoolers read and studied Bill Martin Jr.’s book, Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?  The students were so excited to show their parents all that they had learned. Together with their families, the students read stories, performed songs, and decorated delicious cookies! It’s always a fun day when our families come to play.   A big thank you to all families who were able to participate in our Polar Party!

South Euclid PD Visits Preschool Students

Members of the South Euclid Police Department visited the SEL Preschool recently to interact with students and teach about the role of police officers in keeping the community safe.  Students were thrilled with the opportunity to interact with police radios, handcuffs and meet Arie, a member of the South Euclid Police Department K9 Unit!  The visiting officers also took time to answer students’ questions and show them the inside of an actual police vehicle.  The educational visit helped to bring real-life connections to the classroom, as students have been learning about various types of community helpers.  Thank-you to the South Euclid Police Department for visiting with our Preschool students!

SEL Preschool Announces 20 Book Reading Challenge

The preschool staff is excited to announce the Preschool 20 Book Reading Challenge .  Students will be reading books at home and then filling out snowballs with the names of the books they read to cover a giant snowman in the SEL preschool hallway.  Research indicates that children of all ages need to be exposed to literature on a daily basis.  Reading to your child provides an emotional bond, which will be remembered for a lifetime. Reading not only informs and explains, it also entertains.  As you read to your child, they will begin to develop pre-reading skills including holding a book correctly, turning pages in the right direction and reading from left to right and top to bottom.  This is also a way to build a solid foundation and encourage a lifelong love of reading.  More helpful information about pre-reading success is available online.

Preschool Motor Room Receives Exciting Upgrades

Physical well-being and motor development are an essential part of child development.  As part of Ohio’s Early Learning Standards, students are required to be able to increase their ability to use large and small muscles to produce movements, to touch, grasp and manipulate objects, and to engage in physical activity.  Through gross motor activities, students are also able to enhance their communication skills, social-emotional development and self-help skills. These skills and behaviors play an important role in children’s physical well-being and set children on a path leading toward a healthy lifestyle. As a result, the SEL Preschool has been working in collaboration with Fun and Function to design a new motor room that incorporates a combination of new and used equipment to meet the needs of our youngest learners.  Some of our new features include a ball pit, indoor slide and a rock-climbing wall.  Our students LOVE the new motor room!!
