SEL Hosts First Ever Bike Rodeo on Saturday, May 3rd
The South Euclid Lyndhurst School District invites all K-8 students and their parents to the first ever Bike Rodeo on Saturday morning, May 3rd. Partnering with the South Euclid and Lyndhurst Police Departments, students will have a fun filled morning conquering several obstacle courses that teach safe bike ridership, witnessing a friendly competition between the Lyndhurst and South Euclid Bike Patrol teams, and watching an extreme BMX bike show.

The free event on May 3rd is from 10:00 AM – noon and will be hosted at Greenview Upper Elementary School, rain or shine. The Bike Patrol competition will begin at 10:00 AM, obstacle courses shortly thereafter and the BMX Show begins at 11:00 AM. Students must be accompanied by a parent and need to have a bike helmet and bike in order to participate in the bike rodeo obstacle courses.

If you are interested in attending, please pre-register by clicking here. The first 350 pre-registrants will receive a bike helmet or lock courtesy of Walmart and the Safe Routes to School Grant Program.

The bike rodeo is part of the SEL Schools’ Safe Routes to School grant initiative that is providing over $400,000 of grant money for safer walking and biking routes to school. The rodeo kicks off a series of events in May for Bike/Walk to School Month. Later in May, each K-8 school will host a Walk to School Day to celebrate our Safe Routes to School grant and to promote safe walking to school. These will be held the week of May 19th and are featured in our first Safe Routes to School Newsletter.

For more information about our Bike/Walk to School festivities, please read our Safe Routes to School Newsletter and Bike Rodeo Flyer.

Superintendent Linda N. Reid Interviews Students on Most Recent AVTV Production
Superintendent Linda N. Reid recently finished production of a special edition of her regular AVTV taping with three Brush High School students. With the expressed intent of showcasing various aspects of student life through the eyes of SEL students, Mrs. Reid asked questions which permitted these students to share about their coursework, co-curricular involvements, special instructors they have had and what advice they would pass on to incoming Brush High School students. The three students involved in the taping were Brush High School seniors Brandon McGhee, Tori Williams and sophomore Parker Shapiro. A special thanks goes out to Mr. Mike Bubnow and his student-based team who help to record and edit the entire video production for the SEL Schools.

Stay tuned on your local television channels 22 (Time Warner), 99 (U-Verse), SEL On Demand, and the district Web site to watch this upcoming episode!

Letter from the Asst. Superintendent: Blizzard Bags Given to Students on Thursday, April 17th; Due May 5th

Dear SEL Parent/Guardian:

In the State of Ohio, school districts are allocated five (5) calamity days. Any day(s) beyond five must be made up in order to meet State Legislation requirements. This year, due to extreme weather conditions, SEL Schools utilized six (6) calamity days and as a result, it is necessary that our students make-up one (1) day to meet our educational obligations. Our District, like many others across the State, has opted to use a “Blizzard Bag” option in lieu of adding a day to the end of the school year. During our recent SEL Board of Education Meeting, we identified April 21st as our official make-up day.

Today, your son/daughter was provided with a packet that includes a number of assignments to fulfill the requirements of our SEL “Blizzard Bag” make-up day. Based on State Legislation, students have two (2) weeks to complete the Blizzard Bag assignments which are due to your child’s respective teacher(s) no later than May 5th, 2014. Once the assignments are turned in, they will be graded by the appropriate teacher and those grades will serve as evidence for our “Blizzard Bag make-up” calamity day. BHS Seniors may turn in their assignments prior to the May 5th deadline.

If you are in need of additional information, please contact your child’s teacher or building principal.

Respectfully,
Dr. Veronica Motley
Assistant Superintendent
